Energy Nut Butter

What is Energy Nut Butter for?

For your outdoor adventures.
If you're lacing your boots, grabbing your board, or strapping your helmet, bring along the ultimate fuel for anyone who likes to move their buns and have some funs!

When you're on the go.
Keep a stash in the car or bag for easy access to a healthy snack for when those sugar cravings hit.

As a secret ingredient.
For that extra yum factor, use it as a topping on fruit, porridge, crackers or cereal.

Is Energy Nut Butter vegan? Gluten free?

Yes, Energy Nut Butter ingredients are plant-based and gluten free. However, it is packed in a facility that also handles dairy, gluten, peanuts, sesame, soy, and tree nuts.

Is there caffeine in the Espresso Energy Nut Butter?

Technically yes (as we only use real ingredients), but not at an amount that you’re likely to notice.

For caffeine to have a positive effect on exercise, you need a dose of about 3mg per kilogram of body mass. At rest, an 80mg dose will have a mildly positive effect on cognitive function for most people. With 4% of our recipe containing coffee beans, our recipe would not get close to an 80mg dose.

Note that most sports supplements (e.g. energy gels or hydration drinks and powders) use roughly 30-40mg of caffeine per serve.

Can I use Roam Energy Nut Butters for racing?

As a race food, Energy Nut Butter is best consumed during longer events completed at lower intensity. With 160 calories per packet it’s super energy-dense, and perfect for pockets and packs where space and weight are at a premium.

For tips on race day fuelling, check out our practical guide here.

What does Energy Nut Butter pair with?

We love how Energy Nut Butter stands on it’s own, however here’s a non-inclusive list of foods which it will elevate to new levels of mmm…

Oats and granola
Sandwiches and wraps
A steaming mug of tea or coffee
Coconut curry stir-fry?!

Or need some recipe ideas?  Here are our favourites.

What is the Ketogenic and LCHF diet? And is Energy Nut Butter suitable as part of these diets?

Both the Ketogenic and LCHF (Low-Carb, High Fat) diet use the restriction of carbohydrates to alter your metabolic state to the point where your primary energy source is fueled by fat.  This state of ketosis can have performance benefits for endurance athletes.  Check out Andrius’s deep dive here.

Due to its high fat, and low carb content, Energy Nut Butter is an ideal natural fuel for those following these diets.

What is sunflower lecithin?

Sunflower lecithin is a natural substance that is derived from sunflower seeds. It is commonly used as an emulsifier, which helps to blend oil and water-based ingredients together in products like Energy Nut Butter.

Sunflower lecithin is used as an alternative to soy lecithin, which is another commonly used emulsifier that can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Sunflower lecithin is a safe and healthy ingredient that offers several benefits. It is high in choline, a nutrient that supports brain and nervous system health. It also helps to reduce inflammation in the body and can aid in digestion.

In nut butter, sunflower lecithin helps to create a smooth and creamy texture, prevent separation, and extend the shelf life of the product. It is also vegan and allergen-free, making it a great choice for those with dietary restrictions.

Rest assured that the sunflower lecithin used in our almond and cashew butter is non-GMO and safe for consumption. It is a natural ingredient that helps to improve the texture and taste of our nut butter while offering several health benefits.

Do note that the Chocolate Energy Nut Butter does contain a small amount of soy lecithin. This ingredient is part of the dairy-free chocolate that we use.

Roam Protein

There's so much confusion around protein, where do I even begin?

Begin with our 101 On Protein Guide!

This informative guide, written by our co-founder, Dr Andrius Ramonas, covers all the basics of protein: what it is, why it's important, how the body digests protein, and how to reach your daily protein needs.

Or get to know some basic terminology here.

How much protein do I even need?

Use our calculator to determine your daily protein requirements, then track your daily intake to ensure you’re meeting your needs.

But protein powder gives me gas!

If you’ve had a bad experience, you’re not alone. Many people find they have an intolerance for whey protein which is made from dairy. We use protein from the humble Canadian Golden Pea - and most people find it much easier on their gut. Roam Protein is especially ideal if you have any lactose intolerance or other food allergies (see below).

Why is Roam Protein HASTA Certified (and what does that even mean?)

At Roam, we take quality and safety seriously. That's why our Protein powder is HASTA Certified. This means that every batch of our protein powder is independently tested for over 250 substances that are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. You can rest assured that you're getting a safe and high-quality product.

To learn more, check out our guide to HASTA Certification.

I have food allergies and intolerances. Is Roam Protein right for me?

Our protein is made from Canadian golden peas – which are
completely natural and GMO-free. Roam Protein is vegan and does not contain:

  • Bee products (propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen)
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Gluten
  • Lupin
  • Peanuts
  • Sesame seeds
  • Soy
  • Sulphites
  • Tree nuts

Pea protein is a good alternative to whey protein for those that suffer from lactose intolerance, gut discomfort or food allergies.

Can I gain muscle (bulk) with pea protein?

Yes, absolutely. The nutritional value of Roam Protein is similar to dairy-based proteins. Importantly, pea protein has three branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), including the BCAA leucine, which is important for building and repairing muscles.

To increase your muscle mass, consume protein at regular intervals during the day and combine your protein intake with resistance exercise or strength training. We cover more on this topic in this article.

There is evidence that a dose of about 20 grams of protein can elicit optimal stimulation of muscle protein synthesis (1). Each serving of Roam Protein contains 22 grams (Chocolate) and 23 grams of protein (Vanilla).

Is Roam Protein safe for pregnant women?

To support a healthy pregnancy and healthy development of your baby, it is not only safe but also recommended to increase your protein intake by incorporating various protein-rich sources, such as Roam Protein, into your diet.

Protein requirements increase as early as 16 weeks of gestation, and significantly increase during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters [1].

Daily protein requirements will depend on your body size and current level of physical activity.

We recommend that you consult with your physician to provide advice on your specific nutrition needs during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

What is the difference between pea and whey protein powder?

Whey is made from animal protein and pea protein is plant-based. Both types of protein have their own benefits and drawbacks.

Whey protein is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids your body needs. It's also easily absorbed by the body and has a high biological value, which means it's efficient at repairing and building muscle tissue. However, whey protein can be hard to digest for some people, and it's not suitable for those who are lactose-intolerant or vegan.

Vegan protein powders are made from plants, such as peas, rice or hemp. Pea protein is a particularly good source of vegan protein as it's highly absorbable and easy to digest. It's also low in fat and calories and is rich in iron and other minerals.

Pea protein is not a complete protein, because it only has a small amount of the essential amino acid, methionine. But this shouldn’t be an issue if you are consuming a well balanced diet that includes a variety of plant-based proteins throughout the day.

Overall, pea protein has a better essential amino acid make-up compared with other plant-based proteins. It is a great option for vegans, vegetarians, or those who are looking for an alternative to whey protein.

Pea protein is also environmentally friendly, as it requires less water and land to produce than whey protein. For those looking for a healthy and sustainable protein powder, pea protein is a great option.

What are Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) in the Vanilla Protein?

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) are just one type of fat usually found in coconut. Your regular milk and butter also contain MCTs but a smaller percentage.

MCT has numerous health benefits (namely, cardiovascular and metabolic health) and is used by athletes as a source of exercise energy. This is because MCTs are broken down and digested rapidly compared to other fat forms and provide instant energy during exercise.

We add a small amount of MCT to Roam Protein because of the health benefits it can bring but also because it makes the texture of our protein smoother and creamier.

Excellent product

I’ve recently been trialling foods that don’t ‘irritate’ my gut when doing endurance. The NutButters have been absolutely brilliant. Delicious flavours, easy to consume ‘on the go’, and best of all…not tummy upset!!! I’m absolutely loving them, and will incorporate them into my upcoming Ultramarathon training!!
